A good friend of mine lost his mum not long ago and was very upset. He had enjoyed a close relationship with her and owing to the ill health of his father, was left to organise the funeral. I wrote this poem for him to use at the funeral. Here are a few verses;
Thank you, Mum
Really trying, not succeeding, to think of what to say. To place a lifetime in
a poem, in some constructive way.
You see, my mum was special and deserves some special words. What kids
really think of mums, often goes unheard.
Whilst childhood had its’ ups and downs, the constancy was care. Whatever
life threw at you, mum was always there.
She provided all the answers, to queries big and small. Explained the what’s,
the why’s, the where’s, she seemed to know them all!

These are the opening verses to the last poem that I wrote for the book. Another good friend suggested that I include one for Armed Forces personnel. He has a very senior position in the Royal Navy and thought that it would prove popular. He loves the poem and that's good enough for me!
For Queen & Country
Dear Mum and Dad, thank God for night, some quiet time and short respite. I’ve lost my pen, so I can’t write but I’ll think aloud and then you might….
Just hear my thoughts, my heartfelt prayers, my shopping list and travellers’ fares. I’ve asked my mates to state their wares, just add my growing list to theirs’….
A shared communion that is us, we’ll find a spare seat on our bus. Room for all without the fuss; laughs out loud, forgive the cuss….
No bullshit here, we see past race, no-one needs to hide their face. Tasteless habits, frightened rabbits, vocal heroes, schooling zeros, for good or bad they’re all embraced….
